Tribological and percolation properties of polypropylene/nanodiamond soot composites

Abstract: The relationship between surface- and bulk-related physical and mechanical characteristics of polypropylene (PP)-based composites filled with nanodiamond soot (NDS) particles was investigated. The tribological properties of a composite were considered as surface properties. Wear and friction coefficient values were measured using a steel pin-on-composite disk testing procedure under the justified set of test parameters. Loading of NDS particles to the PP matrix resulted in a drastic increase in the co… Show more

“…The possible area of applications can be very broad for such types of composites, which are classified as functionally graded materials [ 27 ]. Particularly, the gradient structure of the functionally graded composites can be effectively used for creation of sensors, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding components, capacitors, or components for different tribological applications [ 27 , 28 , 29 ].…”

“…Tribological tests were conducted using a pin-on-disk-type testing machine (cylindrical stainless-steel pin) in the dry friction mode according to ASTM G99-05 procedure. Test parameters values can be found in [20]. For each test piece, 6 identical test runs were performed, measuring friction coefficient dependence on time.…”

“…In the works of Neitzel et al [18,19] it was demonstrated that an addition of ND particles in a polymer matrix (epoxy) is an efficient way of decreasing the friction coefficient of the material. In the work of Lebedev et al [20], tribological and percolation properties of composites based on PP modified with non-conductive NDS particles were investigated.…”

“…Additionally, the surface of the PP was modified with nanosecond laser and plasma to get more favorable properties (Riveiro et al, 2016). Moreover, PP was combined with ND, and the composites showed a significant improvement in wear properties (Lebedev et al, 2019). Hence, continuous research is going on to get the full potential of PP for biomedical applications.…”
