Background: Sperm quality plays an important role in the animal industry. The study of the sperm quality of Congjiang Xiang pigs is limited and the Rh123/PI double staining has not been used to detect the sperm quality of boars. Thus, the study aimed to evaluate the sperm quality of the Congjiang Xiang pigs and the feasibility of the flow cytometry (FCM) method in assessing sperm quality in pigs. Methods: Semen samples were evaluated for routine indicators of semen quality and using FCM with single staining and double staining to analyze the integrity of membrane and acrosome, the mitochondrial function. The sperm quality of the Congjiang Xiang pigs was compared with the Large White pigs. Result: The semen of the Congjiang Xiang pigs had a lower sperm concentration than that of the Large White pigs (P less than 0.01). There were no significant differences in sperm vitality, sperm motility and abnormality between the two breeds (P greater than 0.05). Single sperm staining revealed a lower sperm acrosomal integrity in the semen of the Congjiang Xiang pigs than that of the Large White pigs (P less than 0.01). No significant difference between the two breeds in membrane integrity and mitochondrial function was observed (P greater than 0.05). Rh123/PI double staining demonstrated that the rate of live sperm with a normal mitochondrial function of the Congjiang Xiang pigs was significantly higher than that of the Large White pigs (P less than 0.05). The rate of necrotic sperms in the semen of the Congjiang Xiang pigs was significantly lower than that in the semen of the Large White pigs (P less than 0.05). Correlation analysis revealed a positive association between the rates of live sperm in the semen of the congjiang xiang pigs and their sperm motility (P=0.051). Our results suggest that Rh123/PI double staining with flow cytometry can provide more reliable information to assess the boar sperm quality.

The present study was aimed at describing the pig production system, farm management, pig movement, and existing biosecurity level of smallholders' pig production system in North East India. A cross-sectional survey of 1,000 pig producers in four districts (two urban and two rural) in core pig-producing regions of India, where ASF occurrence had been reported, was conducted. The mean pig population was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in urban districts. In urban districts, most of the pig houses were isolated but located on the roadside, while in rural districts, commune pig houses along the roadside were more common. The majority of the respondent purchased (91%) or sold (60%) the pigs during the past 12 months. Swill feeding was common in the entire study area. The majority of the respondent (80%) in rural districts were unaware of ASF. Significant pig trade of live pigs and pork products was observed in the urban district. In the case of on-farm biosecurity measures, only 6.9% of respondents had fencing for the pig farm, 99.3% did not have provision for a footbath, and only 17.2% of the respondents restricted visitors' access to the pig farm. The study revealed that the pig production system is dominated by smallholding units with a frequent introduction or exit of pigs along with poor on-farm biosecurity measures. With the current level of farm management and biosecurity practices, smallholder pig farmers are at an increased risk of ASF and other contagious diseases.

Abstract. Das G, Thou K, Mondal P, Meeran SM. 2022. Review: Ethnomedicinal plants used for wound healing and dermatological problem in the North-Eastern Hill Region of India. Asian J Ethnobiol 5: 102-119. Wound healing is a complex process that facilitates tissue cohesion and homeostasis renewal. Medicinal plants have several bioactive compounds and play a principal role in healing and curing human and animal diseases. In our review, we collected ethnobotanical information mostly from Nagaland, a North-Eastern state of India, from various ethnic groups through personal communication, articles, surveys, and sources. In this study, we selected 26 plant species belonging to 20 families categorized as herbs (15 species), shrubs (5 species), trees (4 species), and climbers (2 species) with scientifically demonstrated medicinal properties or reported from ethnic groups on wound healing, dermatological problem, other numerous diseases and disorders relating to the urinary system, inflammation, tumors, diabetes, diarrhea, gastritis, scabies, skin sores, animal/insect bites, parasitic related problems, and rheumatism. They have been compiled and reviewed. Medicinal plants are considered efficacious adjuvants or alternatives to conventional therapies to treat various diseases, and the use of medicinal plants and their products to cure different ailments was reported and recorded. Our review will help create awareness about using medicinal plants and alternative medicine to ameliorate dermatological problems and treat various diseases in humans and animals.
