Triassic conodonts from Svalbard and their Boreal correlations

Abstract: Conodont faunas are described from Triassic sections of Svalbard, and their occurrences are locally correlated with established ammonoid zones. With a synthesis of previous conodont-based publications, the current work presents a taxonomically up-to-date compilation of conodont data for the Triassic of Svalbard that is used to construct a conodont-based biochronology, indexed to the current lithostratigraphic nomenclature. Twenty-eight taxa spanning the earliest Griesbachian to the earliest Carnian are present… Show more

“…Mørk et al (1999) originally placed the PTB at the base of the Vikinghøgda Formation while, more recently, Hounslow et al (2008) shifted the boundary 12 m above, based on magnetostratigraphic data, whereas Nakrem et al (2008) placed the PTB in-between on the basis of conodonts. The sediments are slightly more mature than the other sections, with MPI-1 values ranging from 0.46-0.69 (R c 0.68-0.82%; Nabbefeld et al, 2010a).…”

“…No evidence of subaerial exposure or a hiatus has been recorded in central Spitsbergen (Mangerud & Konieczny, 1993). However, whether or not the Permo-Triassic boundary represents a period of Dallmann et al, 1999 erosion, non-deposition or conformable sedimentation remains controversial (Mørk et al, 1989;Stemmerik & Worsley, 1989;Mangerud & Konieczny, 1993;Ehrenberg et al, 2001;Nakrem et al, 2008;Dustira et al, 2013).…”

“…The upper part of the Vardebukta Formation contains the so−called Myalina Bed yielding conodonts indicative of the late Griesbachian/early Dienerian (Induan) age (Nakrem et al 2008), whereas bio−magnetostratigraphic analysis (Hounslow and Nawrocki 2008) suggests a late Griesbachian age. The boundary between the Vardebukta Formation and the overlying Tvillingodden Formation is usually re− garded as the Induan/Olenekian boundary (see summary in Mørk et al 1999).…”

“…Mørk et al (1989Mørk et al ( , 1994 and Mørk (1994) showed the existence of a major early Olenekian transgression in the circum−Arctic area. Its age is based on a characteristic fossil assemblages (cono− donts, ammonoids, bryozoans and bivalves) from the Tvillingodden Formation (Mørk et al 1999;Nakrem et al 2008;. According to the palynological investigations of Vigran et al (2014), the overlying Tvillingodden Formation corresponds to the Naumovaspora striata assemblage zone (early Olene− kian/Smithian).…”
