A salicylaldehyde derivative bearing four pyridine arms, 3,5-bis(N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl)-2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (Hbpsal) as a "socket", was prepared and used to derive a series of zinc complexes with various extra anions "plugged" into their vacant site. The crystal structure and H NMR spectra were noticeably influenced by the extra anions, allowing fine-tuning of the properties by "plug-and-socket"-type modification. Similar to unsubstituted salicylaldehyde, the zinc complexes reacted with primary amines to afford Schiff-base compounds. Because of the potential chirality around the coordination sphere, reaction with a chiral amine resulted in an equilibrium system between diastereomers, the potential of which as chiral sources tunable by the extra anions is discussed. Some of the complexes were further converted into zinc- or nickel-salphen (=N,N-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine) complexes. The electrochemical properties of the nickel complex were slightly modified by the extra anions, whereas the photophysical properties of the zinc complex appeared unchanged.

A treatment of MCl2 (M = Zn, Ni, Co, Mg) with the indicator chrome pure blue BX (Na2cpb) yielded new coordination polymers, {[M(H2O)6][M(cpb)2(H2O)2]•(H2O)9}n (M = Zn (1), Ni (2), Co (3)) and {[Mg(H2O)6][Mg(cpb)2(H2O)2]•(H2O)6}n (4)). These compounds, which are crystallographically isostructural, show helical 1D nano-tube structures. Coordination polymers bearing organic bridging ligands with large conjugating system have attracted intense attention to prepare coordination materials with new network motifs and various properties based on the ligands. 1-3 For example, numerous coordination polymers have been prepared by using organic bridging ligands with porphyrin component. 2

New p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arenes, which are mono-, 1,2-di- and tetrasubstituted at the lower rim containing N-(4’-nitrophenyl)acetamide and N,N-diethylacetamide groups in cone and partial cone conformations have been synthesized. Their complexation ability towards a number of tetrabutylammonium salts n-Bu4NX (X = F−, Cl−, Br−, I−, CH3CO2 −, H2PO4 −, NO3 −) was studied by UV spectroscopy. The effective receptor for the anions studied as well as selective receptors for F−, CH3CO2 − and H2PO4 − ions, which based on the synthesized thiacalix[4]arenes, have been obtained. It was shown that p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene tetrasubstituted at the lower rim by N-(4’-nitrophenyl)acetamide moieties bonded to the anions studied with association constants within the range of 3.55 × 103–7.94 × 105 M−1. Besides, the binding selectivity for F−, Cl−, CH3CO2 −, and H2PO4 − anions against other anions was in the range of 4.1–223.9. Substituting one or two fragments in the macrocycle with N,N-diethylacetamide groups significantly reduces the complexation ability of the receptor. In contrast to the 1,3-disubstituted macrocycle containing two N-(4’-nitrophenyl)acetamide moieties, the 1,2-disubstituted thiacalix[4]arene, which contains only one such fragment and a N,N-diethylacetamide moiety, selectively binds F− anions.
