Trial-by-trial coupling between EEG and BOLD identifies networks related to alpha and theta EEG power increases during working memory maintenance

Abstract: a b s t r a c t a r t i c l e i n f oPET and fMRI experiments have previously shown that several brain regions in the frontal and parietal lobe are involved in working memory maintenance. MEG and EEG experiments have shown parametric increases with load for oscillatory activity in posterior alpha and frontal theta power. In the current study we investigated whether the areas found with fMRI can be associated with these alpha and theta effects by measuring simultaneous EEG and fMRI during a modified Sternberg t… Show more

“…Furthermore, the power of delta oscillations is negatively related to sympathetic activity [45] which normally would be more active under acoustic stimulation [47]. Notably, the relative delta power in the music frog declines with time in the left mesencephalon, especially in response to HSA calls, consistent with the idea that active neural processing results in a decrease in low frequency EEG power and an increase in high frequency power [48,49]. These dynamics might reflect the fact that Babina females in the reproductive stage exhibit a high level of approach behavior when listening to HSA calls [36].…”
