Trento Social Commons. Community Engagement as Tools for New Physical and Cultural Relationships Between Rural and Peripheral Spaces

Abstract: Premises: ongoing discourses on alpine territories and cities Expanding urban development has changed the features of cultural landscapes in many countries in Europe. We find that for many cities growing land use pressure is a common challenge related with current development. Natural and cultural assets of urban and peri-urban spaces in metropolitan areas, also at alpine level, are strained by various phenomena related to structural densification, migrations, changes in traditional lifestyles and, somehow, by… Show more

“…The expansion and relevance of the phenomenon of marginality, in its very diverse definitions and multifaceted connotations, makes it crucial to study these contexts and the potential of innovative collective practices, especially with the goal of a possible renaissance and re-settlement of these landscapes. Municipalities at different scales and in different marginal contexts are operating on common goods as an old/new dimension of public space welfare (Gretter et al, 2018). Beyond unsustainable topdown approaches, a stronger support towards bottom-up initiatives has lately become a more usual governance practice.…”

“…It represents the most prominent example of this land governance in Italy, which is deeply rooted in the local culture and history (Dalla Torre et al, 2021). Territorial and landscape planning or resource management are among the areas where the self-government structure has been applied the most by innovating community-led practices of managing the commons, which date back to the medieval age (Gios et al, 2002;Gretter et al, 2018a). Such structures strongly impact the food sector since they have often been translated into cooperative networks for farmers and consumers.…”

“…The current paper belongs to a set of ongoing multi-scalar and trans-disciplinary research studies investigating potential approaches for regenerating rural areas in the Alpine areas of Italy, which have been suffering for years from underused phenomena (Balducci, 2019;Gretter et al, 2018a).…”
