Trends of skin diseases in organ-transplant recipients transplanted between 1966 and 2006: a cohort study with follow-up between 1994 and 2006

Abstract: This study gives a systematic overview of the high burden of skin diseases in OTRs. The relative distributions of skin diseases importantly changed with time after transplantation, with squamous cell carcinoma contributing most to the increasing burden of skin diseases with increasing time after transplantation.

“…Numerous studies have pointed out that skin infections and Non Melanoma Skin Cancers (NMSCs) are commonly occurring complications for transplant recipients [6,8,11,12,13,14] due to the long-term immunosuppression used to prevent transplant rejection. Conversely, scant clinical data are available regarding the incidence of inflammatory skin diseases in patients with solid organ transplantation (Table 4).…”

“…S olid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) maintained on immunosuppressive therapy have a high risk of developing malignancies, especially nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC). [1][2][3][4][5] Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common, with a 50 to 250 times higher incidence in SOTRs than in the general population. 3 SCCs in SOTRs are also more aggressive, with higher rates of metastatic disease and local invasion.…”
