Contamination of air and soil with Lead (Pb) is a great global concern. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the Pb content in the atmosphere and soil at 56 sampling sites in the Salafchegan industrial zone located in Qom province, Iran. The results indicated that Pb accumulated in air and soil media. The geostatistical analysis of Pb showed that pollution hotspots were detected around industrial areas as well as in sites with intense vehicular traffic. Although the average concentration of Pb in the air (0.013 µg/m3) and soil (3.05 mg/kg), were lower than the limit of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in some polluted zones, the Pb concentrations exceeded more than 1.2 and 2.6 times in the air and soil, respectively. Ingestion and inhalation were the main pathways of Pb exposure. Hazard Index (HI) values in some land use areas and children under five years were above EPA's safe limit. HI value for children was above 1. The carcinogenic risk analysis showed that higher carcinogenic risk from the acceptable limit (1 × 10− 6) was presented in different age groups in the sampling sites. Consequently, children are considered a high-risk group for Pb exposure in studied areas.

The presence of Microplastics (MPs) in the environment is a serious threat to the health of humans and ecosystems. One common source of environmental MPs pollution is the sludge and effluent discharged by wastewater treatment facilities. Typically, there are no specific measures to remove MPs in treatment plants. The purpose of this study is to investigate the presence of MPs in the inlet wastewater, outlet effluent, and sludge of one of the wastewater treatment plants of Qom city in Iran. Monthly sampling was done in the spring and summer of 2022. A total of 18 samples were obtained from wastewater, effluent, and sludge. MPs were identified and separated according to valid guidelines. MPs were subjected to SEM and µ-Raman analysis for further investigation. The average MPs in wastewater and effluent were 710 ± 34.67 and 51 ± 4.42 (MPs/L), respectively, while it was 30.76×103 (MPs/kg) in sludge. The average removal efficiency of MPs in the treatment plant was 97.6%. Overall, polyethylene terephthalate and fibers were the most frequent in the samples. Dominant sizes of MPs in wastewater and sludge were 250–500 µm, while their size in effluent was 250 − 100 µm. Considering the results, it is estimated that 2652×106 MPs enter the environment through effluent every day and can lead to air, soil, and surface water pollution. It makes the need for decisions at the international level to reduce the production and consumption of plastics more necessary.

Performance of TANN, NARX, and GMDHT Models for Urban Water Demand Forecasting: A Case Study in a Residential Complex in Qom, Iran

To keep the balance between demand and supply, methods based on the average per capita consumption were usually applied to predict water demand. More complicated models such as linear regression and time series models were developed for this purpose. However, after the introduction of artificial neural networks (ANNs), different applications of this method were used in the field of water supply management, especially for urban water demand prediction. In this study, multiple types of ANNs were studied to understand their suitability for a residential complex water demand prediction in the city of Qom, Iran. The results indicated that time series ANN (TANN), nonlinear autoregressive network with exogenous inputs (NARX), group method of data handling time series (GMDHT), and their wavelet counterparts (i.e., w-TANN and w-NARX) exhibited varying degrees of performance. Among the aforementioned models, w-NARX performed the best (based on the average overall error) with the test set root mean squared error (MSE) of 49.5 (m3 /h) and R of 0.93, followed by the GMDHT model with the test set MSE of 104 (m3 /h) and R of 0.97 and w-TANN with the test set MSE of 68.8 (m3 /h) and R of 0.91. In addition, the feedback connection in NARX compared to TANN demonstrated overall performance improvement.
