Trends of Asthma Exacerbation Readmission Rates: A Review of a National Database

Abstract: To study the trend of asthma exacerbation readmission rates over the last several years. METHODS: We evaluated the readmission rates for asthma over the last several years to observe the trend of asthma readmissions to the hospital within 30 days of discharge. We present the trends during the time period 2009 to 2013 using data from Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Nationwide Readmissions Database. A cohort of 1,220,047 asthma hospitalizations of patients older than 18 years was identified in this time … Show more

“…The readmission rate for COPD patients in China is much lower than that of their American counterparts (5.6% versus 7.2%) in the same period from 2009 to 2012 [ 15 ], and this can also be seen in elderly patients (4.7% for Chinese patients aged ≥61 years versus 6.8% for American patients aged ≥65 years) from 2008 to 2012 [ 15 , 32 ]. In contrast to COPD, there has been a significant increment in asthma readmission rates between 2005 and 2015 with an average readmission rate of 6.2%, which is higher than that in the United States [ 33 ], especially between 2009 and 2013 (7.0% versus 5.1%). Pneumonia was a kind of acute disease, thus having the lowest readmission rate.…”

“…The lack of information on hospital readmissions is also a limiting factor caused by using an anonymous database. This parameter would be a potential indicator of the quality of healthcare provided and an objective of effectiveness and efficiency [52,53].…”

“…From 2009 to 2013, asthma admissions in the USA totaled 1,220,047. The readmission rate within 30 days was more than 5% [ 17 ]. Among children who were hospitalized for asthma, around 20% were readmitted the next year.…”
