Trends in Vegetation Response to Drought in Sudano-Sahelian Part of Northern Nigeria

Abstract: The results based on the ground truth (rainfall) data show that many years of drought episode were experienced over the study area. On the other hand, the prime indicators (Land cover and GI maps) used in this study also depicts the changes that took place over the study area in response to this climatic anomaly (drought) and it could be noted that there was dramatic reduction in the occurrence towards the end of the last two decade, 1990-1999, which simply indicated improvement in rainfall even in 2000 and th… Show more

“…This has involved monitoring of El Niño southern oscillation (ENSO) and other oceanic and atmospheric predictors of climate (Yasunaka and Hawana 2005;Hasternrath et al 2004); and sectoral assessment of impacts of climate change (Fabeku and Okogbue 2014;Tonnang et al 2010;Kundezewicz et al 2008;Hansen and Indeje 2004). Biophysical assessment of global warming has led to improvement in the understanding of interactions between atmosphere, sea, and land surfaces; advances in modeling and prediction of the global climate system.…”

“…The warmest months are March and April when daytime temperature exceeds 40 o C [4] . According to [18] , rainfall in the zone is highly variable and the onset of rain is erratic. The dry season is from October to early May, while the wet season is concentrated in a short period that runs from May to September [4] [19] .…”

“…The rainfall peak in August is due to the presence of ITD which drives the maritime air mass across the zone. Typical average annual rainfall values range between 150 mm to less than 1000 mm [4][14] [18] . It was stated that the zone is ravaged [20] with prolong increasing evapotranspiration, drought and desertification due to low rainfall amount.…”

“…Study Area The Sudano-Sahelian region of Nigeria ( Figure 1) lies between latitude 10ÚN and 14ÚN and longitude 4ÚE and 14ÚE (Fabeku & Okogbue, 2014) in the north extreme of the country. The vegetation is savannah although less dense compared to the guinea savannah beyond its southern boundary.…”
