Trends in the postmortem epidemiology of invasive fungal infections at a university hospital

Abstract: The results of this analysis show continuing and relevant changes in the epidemiology of IFIs over time. Despite the expanding antifungal armamentarium, IFIs infections remain an important cause of morbidity and mortality in severely ill hospitalized patients.

“…However, exclusive kidney involvement is rare in human systemic candidiasis and kidney manifestation typically only occurs in disseminated candidiasis affecting multiple organs. 29,30 Despite this, the murine infection model enables the analysis of rapid immune activation induced by systemic Candida dissemination and has undoubtedly revealed important insights into host responses to fungal infection. 31,32 Unlike humans, mice are intrinsically Candida na€ ıve and establishing colonization of the gastrointestinal tract in adult mice requires anti-microbial therapy and oral application of Candida.…”

“…Invasive aspergillosis is associated with high morbidity and mortality (19), and in a recent case series chronic pulmonary aspergillosis was shown to have a 50% mortality rate during an 18-month period (26). It is estimated that there are over 3 million patients worldwide with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (8) and more than 1 million have chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) following tuberculosis (9).…”

“…Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are increasing in incidence and constitute an important cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised pediatric patient populations, including, but not limited to, preterm neonates, children and adolescents with hematologic malignancies, and those undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) [1][2][3]. Although children and adults are similarly vulnerable to IFIs, important differences between these two patient groups have to be considered.…”
