Trends in the incidence and DALYs of schizophrenia at the global, regional and national levels: results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

Abstract: Aim Schizophrenia is a serious health problem worldwide. This systematic analysis aims to quantify the burden of schizophrenia at the global, regional and national levels using the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017 (GBD 2017). Methods We collected detailed information on the number of incidence cases, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR) and age-standardised rate of DALYs (ASDR) during 1990–2017 from GBD 2017. The estimated annual percentage… Show more

“…That is, y = α + βx + ϵ, where y = ln (age-standardised rate) and x = calendar year. The estimated annual percentage change was calculated as 100×(exp(β) −1), and its 95% uncertainty interval (UI) was obtained from the linear regression model [20,21]. The estimated annual percentage change > 0 and its 95% UI > 0 denoted an increasing agestandardised rate trend.…”

“…Accordingly, a regression line was fitted to the natural logarithm of the rates: y = α + β x + ɛ , where y = ln (ASR) and x = calendar year. The EAPC was calculated as 100 × (exp( β ) − 1), and its 95% UI was obtained from the linear regression model (Liu et al ., 2019 ; He et al ., 2020 ). An increasing ASR trend was observed when EAPC > 0 and 95% UI > 0.…”

“…Recovery is recognized as an ultimate goal for mental healthcare services [ 1 ]. Worldwide, the disability-adjusted life years of schizophrenia increased by 62.46% in 2017 compared to 1990 [ 2 ]. Inpatient psychiatric rehabilitation as an interim pathway provides recovery-oriented care to enable people who are disabled by mental disorders to live satisfactory lives [ 3 , 4 ].…”
