Trends in the Consumption of Opioid Analgesics in Taiwan From 2002 to 2007: A Population-Based Study

Abstract: Opioid prescriptions and expenditure increased steadily from 2002 to 2007 in Taiwan, as in nearby Asian countries, but remained much lower than in developed countries. Pethidine (meperidine) was predominantly prescribed to noncancer patients, whereas morphine and fentanyl were mainly prescribed for cancer patients.

“…5 From the analysis by WHO, the morphine usage is related to the development of a country. 6,7 Although the usage of morphine in Taiwan is similar to other countries in Asia, 8 the rate is still lower than developed countries in Europe and North America. 9 From 2010 to 2014, the usage of morphine is increasing in our medical center without changing the number of hospital beds, and this indicates the improvement of pain control after implementing the pain management policy.…”

“…In order to fill this knowledge gap, many developed countries calculate the total amount of opioids prescribed to cancer patients by analyzing administrative claims data or prescription database (3)(4)(5). Claims data are useful for monitoring medical utilization and prescription patterns, but it requires that its accuracy, validity and reliability are tested, so that characteristics and limitations of the dataset is well understood by those who use the data for future research (6)(7)(8)(9).…”
