Trends In Sonet Network Evolution

Abstract

The SONET based networks of tomorrow will offer many advantages over the current asynchronous networks. This paper w i l l discuss the evolution of the asynchronous networks of today to the SONET based next generation networks. Clearly, there is a tremendous embedded base of asynchronous network elements that will not be replaced overnight with SONET compatible equipment. In addition to the investment in transmission equipment, there is an enormous investment in outside plant, Operations Support Systems (OSs) , and training of personnel. Therefore, in order to reach the goal of a SONET based next generation network, vendors must offer equipment that facilitates a smooth transition from the networks of today to the SONET based networks of the future. The next generation equipment must fit with the embedded base and provide the features to enable new capabilities and revenue opportunities in an evolutionary way.A three step evolution to next generation networks is presented. Each step is designed to provide maximum network benefits while ensuring a good fit with the embedded equipment and operations.
