Trends in popularity of some morphological traits of purebred dogs in Australia

Abstract: BackgroundThe morphology of dogs can provide information about their predisposition to some disorders. For example, larger breeds are predisposed to hip dysplasia and many neoplastic diseases. Therefore, longitudinal trends in popularity of dog morphology can reveal potential disease pervasiveness in the future. There have been reports on the popularity of particular breeds and behavioural traits but trends in the morphological traits of preferred breeds have not been studied.MethodsThis study investigated tre… Show more

“…Most of these surgical diseases are preventable if pet owners are adequately informed and necessary precautionary measures are taken for prevention. Dog possession in different climes is influenced by many dog breeds' attractive qualities such as; coat colors, coat type, facial, body and tail conformations, size, behaviour, temperament, cuteness and resilience (Waller et al, 2013;Brown et al, 2013;Pederson et al, 2016;Teng et al, 2016). Puppies are typically readily acquired compared to adult dogs (Brown et al, 2013).…”

“…The current study bene tted from inclusion of a large number (1756) of osteosarcoma cases con rmed through analysis of data associated with biopsy samples submitted from veterinary practices to VPG Histology, Bristol, UK [21]. The study additionally bene tted from a control group of 905,211 dogs registered in primary care veterinary practices across the UK within the VetCompass project so that the results could be generalisable to the wider vet-attending dog population [22,23]. Although univariable and multivariable regression analyses were used to determine the effect of demographic risk factors on the odds of osteosarcoma, only the multivariable results will be discussed because these accounted for the confounding effects of other variables.…”

“…Using anonymised veterinary clinical and demographic data from pathology records originating from VPG histology [21] and VetCompass™ [22], this study aimed to identify demographic risk factors for canine osteosarcoma with a particular focus on reporting both predispositions and protections associated with breed and conformation [23]. The primary hypothesis of the current study was that, based on previous studies, the odds of osteosarcoma are higher amongst speci c breeds such as Rottweilers, Scottish Deerhounds, Wolfhounds, Greyhounds and Golden Retrievers compared with crossbreeds [4,5,14].…”

“…Members of the veterinary profession are well aware of the health problems associated with extreme brachycephalic morphology, particularly brachy-cephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) (Teng and others 2016). This is characterised by stenotic nares, an overlong soft palate, tracheal collapse and everted laryngeal saccules.…”
