Trends in overweight and obesity prevalence in Chilean children: comparison of three definitions

Abstract: Objective: To compare trends in prevalence of overweight and obesity among Chilean children using three different criteria. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional school-based study to analyse these trends in 6-y-old boys and girls who entered first grade in 1987, 1990, 1993, 1996 and 2000. Gender-specific prevalence of overweight and obesity were determined with three criteria: weight for height (W-H) Z-scores compared to NCHS 1977; present reference used by the Ministry of Health; and body mass index (BMI) com… Show more

“…The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing in adults as well as in children worldwide (Livingstone, 2000;Bundred et al, 2001;Magarey et al, 2001;Kain et al, 2002;Dietz, 2004). Epidemiological data show that obesity and overweight are multi-determined chronic health problems resulting from complex interactions between genes and an environment that promotes high-energy intake and lowenergy expenditure, resulting in a positive energy balance (Gunnell et al, 1998;Weinsier et al, 1998;Goran, 2001).…”

“…The IOTF reference produced a lower prevalence of overweight than the CDC reference in the younger children 2-14 years. Additionally, in a large sample of Chilean children aged 6 years, it was reported that the overall prevalence of obesity was halved when using the IOTF reference compared to the CDC reference (Kain et al, 2002).…”

“…It prepared BMI percentiles from databases of six countries with low prevalence of overweight and obtained the percentile corresponding to a BMI of 25 kg/m 2 for different age groups and both genders. In general, compared to other references, WHO's standards produce similar estimates of overweight but lower estimates of obesity (Reilly et al, 2000;Kain et al, 2002;Abrantes et al, 2003). Chilean investigators have developed local percentiles of BMI for age and have proposed the use of percentiles based not on age but on Tanner stage (Burrows and Muzzo, 1999;Burrows, 2001).…”
