Trends in multiprocessor and distributed operating systems designs

Abstract: Abstract. This paper presents an overview of the developments in operating systems technology for distributed computing systems and multiprocessor machines. We focus on those design principles that are now widely accepted as useful design paradigms. Approaches common to distributed and multiprocessor operating systems are identified. Issues discussed include process scheduling and synchronization, load balancing, virtual and sharedmemory management and parallel file systems. The task-thread model and the objec… Show more

“…A multithreaded Operating System (OS) is needed, since various tasks are running simultaneously inside an MS. These tasks may run quasi-parallel [ 39 ], performing for example a measurement and a processing of unknown position. The OS represents the upper sub-layer of the system layer, which abstracts the hardware sub-layer (cf.…”

“…As shown in Figure 3 , the hardware configuration affords, on the one hand, the MS sensing, storing and processing of sensory data and, on the other hand, the CDUs switching the coils. The tasks on the MS and the CDUs run quasi-parallel [ 36 ], performing both sampling the magnetic data and the synchronization task on the MS. In this case, a multithreaded operating system (OS) is needed, which represents the upper sub-layer of the system layer and relies on the bottom of the hardware sub-layer ( cf .…”
