Trends in integrated water resources management research: a literature review

Abstract: The integrated water resources management (IWRM) paradigm has emerged as the main guiding framework for water resources development and management. Since the IWRM approach started to gain prominence with the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Summit and the Dublin Conference, developing and developed countries worldwide have adopted and transposed the tools and principles embodied in this holistic approach into their national policies as well as their regulatory and institutional frameworks. “…The concept of integrated water resources management (IWRM) has been the subject of discussion among water scholars for decades (Blomquist & Schlager, 2005;Butterworth, Warner, Moriarty, Smits, & Batchelor, 2010;Gallego-Ayala, 2013;Moriarty, Batchelor, Laban, & Fahmy, 2010).…”

“…Coordination is a central element of IWRM (Gallego-Ayala, 2013;Grigg, 2008). In addition to the 3 E's, IWRM core principles usually include integration, participation, decentralization, and water management according to hydrological boundaries (GWP (Global Water Partnership), 2000).…”

“…One piece of evidence that points to this conclusion is the way literature reviews are conducted. An example of this can be seen in the literature review conducted by Gallego-Ayala (2013) in which the researcher searched for the terms IWRM and Integrated Water Management but not Integrated Urban Water Management, Total Water Management or other terms. In the paper's analysis section, concepts are discussed which are highly relevant to the urban sector such as water supply augmentation, the economic value of water, and climate change.…”
