BACKGROUND The Apolygus lucorum is one of the most destructive insect pests in China with a wide range of host plants. Interaction of A. lucorum with surrounding environment heavily relies on chemical communication. Deorphanization of receptors involved in odors detection elevates our understanding of the olfactory system of this pest and may help to develop a chemical ecology‐based control strategy. RESULTS AlucOR80, an odorant receptor (OR) in A. lucorum was newly cloned. Gene expression analysis showed that this receptor was mainly expressed in the antennae and head of both sexes but with a male bias. The Xenopus oocytes heterologous expression system coupled with the two‐electrode voltage‐clamp (TEVC) recording revealed that AlucOR80 was tuned to 21 selected compounds. Furthermore, electroantennogram (EAG) tests confirmed that all 21 ligands of AlucOR80 were electrophysiologically active in antennae of both sexes. Behavioral trials in a three‐cage olfactometer indicated that 16 compounds were behaviorally active, amongst which, 12 components were attractants and four components were repellents for adults of both sexes. Butyl butyrate and Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) were the strongest attractive and repellant compounds, respectively. Importantly, we found the repellency of 1, 8‐Cineole, S‐(−)‐cis‐Verbenol and (1S)–(1)‐beta‐Pinene against adults of A. lucorum. CONCLUSION Although AlucOR80 is a general OR, may play important role in the olfactory perception of A. lucorum. Screening of AlucOR80 ligands by behavioral assay provided valuable insights by which olfactory‐based management approaches could be developed by utilizing the behaviorally active components as attractants or repellents. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

The insect repellent IR3535 is one of the important alternative in the fight against mosquito-borne disease such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika. Using a multidisciplinary approach, we propose the development of an innovative insecticide-based vector control strategy using an unexplored property of IR3535. We have demonstrated that in insect neurosecretory cells, very low concentration of IR3535 induces intracellular calcium rise through cellular mechanisms involving orthosteric/allosteric sites of the M1-muscarinic receptor subtype, G protein βγ subunits, background potassium channel inhibition generating depolarization, which induces voltage-gated calcium channel activation. The resulting internal calcium concentration elevation increases nicotinic receptor sensitivity to the neonicotinoid insecticide thiacloprid. The synergistic interaction between IR3535 and thiacloprid contributes to significantly increase the efficacy of the treatment while reducing concentrations. In this context, IR3535, used as a synergistic agent, seems to promise a new approach in the optimization of the integrated vector management for vector control.Mosquito-biting rates represent a major concern in overall vector capacity. It is possible to drastically lower the spread of mosquito-borne disease by disrupting host-seeking and feeding 1,2 . Therefore, repellents represent an important alternative in the fight against mosquito-borne disease such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika 3 . Modes of action of the most commonly used insect repellents such as DEET, IR3535, picaridine characterized so far are diverse. They can i) elicit deterrent feeding behavior, ii) modulate mosquito behavior through gustatory mechanism effect via gustatory receptor neurons 4,5 and iii) affect olfactory mechanism of action involving transmembrane odorant receptor proteins 6-8 located in olfactory receptor neurons [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17] .Recent studies indicate that some repellent chemicals, such as DEET can also directly act on both insect peripheral and central nervous systems. They induce locomotor activity disruption, neuroexcitation (via octopamine receptors), cholinergic system alterations (e.g., acetylcholinesterase inhibition and M1/M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor subtype interactions) and monooxygenase regulation [17][18][19][20][21][22] . This demonstrates that repellents can modulate multiple physiological functions through complex mechanisms. Unfortunately, the precise mechanisms of how these chemicals modulate the specific molecular targets in insects still remain elusive, contested and/or misunderstood. Exploring precisely the mode of action of such compounds may lead to new more effective alternatives in the Insect Resistance Management for preventing the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. ÖzetBöcek ve sinek gibi haşereler günlük yaşantımızda istenmeyen ve zarar verebilen canlı türleridir. Genel olarak, sivrisinekler, sinekler, keneler, pireler, bitler, karıncalar vs. gibi eklembacaklılar, ısırılmasından sonra insanlara ölümcül hastalıkların yayılmasına neden olan parazitler ve patojenler taşıyabilirler. Eklem bacaklılar arasında sivrisinekler dünyadaki en ölümcül hayvanlardan biridir. Her yıl ortalama 500 milyona varan sıtma vakası yaşanmakta ve bunların % 90'ı Afrika'da gerçekleşir. Dang dünyadaki en önemli sivrisinek kaynaklı virus hastalığıdır. Dünya çapında 2,5 milyar insan enfeksiyon riski altındadır ve 100 den fazla ülkede her yıl 20 milyondan fazla vaka görülür. Bu problemin önüne geçilmesi için losyon, spray, bileklik gibi ürünler piyasada satılmaktadır. Ancak, koruyucu tekstil ürünleri tüm vücudu kapsayabildiği ve konforu nedeniyle daha kullanışlıdırlar. Bu tür koruyucu giysiler, böcek itici giysiler olarak adlandırılır. Onların işlevi, insanları genel olarak böcek ya da eklembacaklıların ısırmasından korumaktır. Aynı zamanda uzun süreli koruma sağlaması için, bu giysiler birden fazla yıkamaya dayanıklı olmalıdır. Bu çalışmada sivrisinek koruyucu tekstil ürünleri, üretim metodları ve bu kumaşların etkinliğinin ölçüm yöntemleri kaynak taraması metoduyla incelenmiştir. AbstractInsects such as spider and fly are harmful species that are not desired in our daily lives. Generally, such arthropods as fly, mosquito, tick and ants can carry parasites and pathogens that can cause human beings to pick up malignant diseases after bitten by them. Among these arthropods, mosquitoes are one of the most malignant animals in the world. Each year about 500 million malaria cases are observed, 90% of which occur in Africa. Dang is the most important mosquito-borne virus disease in the world. Worldwide, 2.5 billion people are at risk of infection and more than 20 million cases occur every year in over 100 countries. In order to prevent this problem, some products like lotion, spray and wristbands are sold in the market. However, textile products that protects from insects more practical because of their comfort and their whole body covering feature. These protective fabrics are called insectrepellent textiles. The main function of these fabrics is to protect humans from insects or arthropods. These fabrics are also wash-resistant. This study analyses insect-repellent fabrics, their production and the efficiency measurement methods by means of literature review.
