Trends in incidence and survival of cutaneous malignant melanoma in Estonia: a population-based study

Abstract: The proportion of stage I and T1 cases is lower in Estonia compared with the Scandinavian data and is likely a major contributor to the persisting overall survival deficit in Estonia. The apparent deficit in stage II survival also warrants further investigation. A public health program is necessary in Estonia to raise awareness of CM and to significantly increase early stage diagnosis.

“…Patients with LM are mostly elderly and have been shown to have a relative survival rate of 104% compared with the general population, while patients with LMM have a relative survival rate of 99% after treatment (1). In contrast, studies on malignant melanoma (non-LMM) showed a relative 5-year survival of 76-83.4% after treatment (20,21). The current study found no LM-or LMM-related deaths.…”

“…In Serbia between 2005 and 2010 the median Breslow thickness reported was 3 mm [38]. In Estonia the proportion of thin melanoma (T1 of TNM classification) increased from 7% in men and 14% in women in 1992 to 34% in men and 41% in women in 2010-2012, while the proportion of T4 tumors decreased slightly [39]. In Croatia the mean Breslow thickness reported in 2012 was 2 mm, with 75% of T4 tumors found in men and 60% of T1 tumors in women [40].…”

“…Melanoma is one of the most notoriously invasive neoplasia, and it originates from cells that produce melanin [1]. The prognosis of melanoma remains dismal because melanoma is refractory to the current therapies [2,3]. Moreover, the exact cause of malignant melanoma is very complex and poorly understood.…”
