Abstract: This study examines trends in Black student involvement within traditional campus organizations at predominantly White campuses. Studies of Black students studying on predominantly White campuses report that their marginal participation within traditional campus organizations is attributed to a campus climate described as cool or unwelcoming.

“…African Americans, particularly at PWls, need formal means of involvement (e.g., student organizations), as there are limited opportunities for informal interactions due to small numbers of African American students on campus (Guiffrida, 2003). Sutton and Kimbrough (2001) examined trends in Black student involvement within traditional campus organizations at PWls (PWls). The researchers used the Student Involvement and Leadership Scale (Kimbrough, 1995) to measure different types of involvement on and off-campus.…”

“…However, the negative perception of the environment had a positive impact on grades for African American students, but also increased the likelihood of leaving college (Fischer, 2007). The perception of an unwe1coming campus environment has been found to negatively affect Black student involvement out of the classroom at PWIs (Sutton & Kimbrough, 2001). While campus organizations have become more ethnically diverse, involvement in traditional student organizations by African American students is marginal (Sutton & Kimbrough, 2001).…”
