Trends in antimicrobial resistance amongst pathogens isolated from blood and cerebrospinal fluid cultures in Pakistan (2011-2015): A retrospective cross-sectional study

Abstract: While antimicrobial resistance (AMR) continues to be a major public health problem in Pakistan, data regarding trends of resistance among pathogenic bacteria remains scarce, with few studies presenting long-term trends in AMR. This study was therefore designed to analyze long-term AMR trends at a national level in Pakistan. We report here results of a comprehensive analysis of resistance, among pathogens isolated from blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), between 2011 and 2015. Susceptibility data was obtained … Show more

“…Studies conducted in Karachi and Hyderabad, Pakistan also showed similar findings of antimicrobial resistance where S. typhi was resistant to most of the antibiotics while there was around 100 % sensitivity to Azithromycin and Meropenem 10,19,24 Now-a days the drug of choice is Azithromycin oral or Meropenem intravenous in the hospitalized patients 1,24 , these findings also support our study.…”

“…Travel and trade can contribute to this spread; the spread of NDM-1, from Indian sub-continent region to Europe and United States highlights the global nature of this public health disaster [ 3 ]. Reports of high levels of antibacterial resistance [ 4 7 ] from hospitals as well as the community [ 8 , 9 ] in Pakistan, the fifth most populous country globally [ 10 ], places an additional burden on an overstressed and under resourced health care system. Circulating mobile genetic elements in bacterial species [ 5 , 7 , 11 ] that can transfer multidrug resistance genes within and between species have also been reported.…”

“…(7.3%), data from Pakistan suggested a sharp increase of CR among Acinetobacter spp. from 50% in 2011 to 95.5% in 2015 [ 64 , 65 , 66 ], 61.89% imipenem resistant Acinetobacter spp. in 2018 and 84.0% in 2022 [ 56 , 67 ].…”
