Trends and Variability of Wheat Crop in Pakistan

Abstract: The main focus of the study was to analyze trends and variability of wheat crop in Pakistan. Semi-log trend model was used to find trends and growth rate in area, yield and production of wheat crop whereas the variability was measured by Cuddy-Della Valle index of variability. The findings of the study illustrate that wheat area in Punjab, Sindh and Baluchistan was increased over the time whereas cultivated area of wheat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was marginally decreased during 1981-85 to 2011-15. “…Pakistan's agricultural productivity has extensively relied on unsustainable and harmful practices, such as extensive use of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides, which have led to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions [15][16][17]. The above tendency is particularly evident in the wheat and rice sectors, the two locomotives of Pakistan's agriculture [18][19][20]. The contribution of the agricultural sector to the country's GHG emissions has peaked at 44% (compared to the 24% contribution of the agricultural sector to the GDP) [21].…”

“…In 2012, 23.47 million tons of wheat were produced from 8.65 million hectares, and 25.21 million tons were produced from an area of 8.90 million hectares in 2011 (Zulfiqar and Hussain, 2014). At the provincial level, Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Baluchistan account for 76%, 16%, 5%, and 3% of the total wheat production of the country, respectively (Abid, 2018). According to a report, wheat constitutes 60% of the daily caloric intake of the average Pakistani, and it is grown over land of 9 million hectares throughout the country (Haider and Zaidi, 2017).…”

“…As the rhizobacteria are recognized by a certain host, crosstalk of the signaling molecules is initiated ( Verma et al, 2021 ). The signaling also includes the chemotactic movements of microbes regulated by the root exudates of plants ( Abid et al, 2018 ). The occurrence of certain bacterial communities is highly influenced by biotic and abiotic factors.…”
