Trends and patterns of care of sentinel node biopsy in cutaneous melanoma: a population‐based study in Queensland

Abstract: BackgroundSentinel node biopsy (SNB) has evolved from offering staging and prognostication to a procedure that guides therapeutic management. The aim was to evaluate the rate of SNB for patients with high‐risk melanoma and assess factors that may have impacted on the procedure being performed.MethodsData of patients with primary invasive cutaneous melanoma from 01 January 2009 to 31 December 2019 were obtained from the Queensland Oncology Repository. High‐risk melanoma was defined as ≥0.8 mm thick or < 0.8 … Show more

“…The sensitivity of ICG mapping in this study was not very high, only 50%, but the incidence of false negatives and the reduced population (20) influenced this outcome. The positive predictive value was 100% and the negative predictive value was 75% [40][41][42].…”

“…SLNB has become an important tool for the treatment of OTSCC [ 7 ]. SLNB allows for the identification of the first lymph node that drains the tumor area, and its biopsy can provide valuable information regarding the presence or absence of occult neck metastasis [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ]. In recent years, several studies have investigated the diagnostic and prognostic value of SLNB in OTSCC [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ].…”

“…18 Using the Australian guidelines for the indication for SLNB, in Queensland, in 2009, 14.2% of eligible patients had the procedure, increasing to 36.8% in 2019. 19 Even accepting that it would never be 100% it is clear there were a number of eligible patients who have not had the opportunity to consider receiving adjuvant therapy.…”
