Trends and Foundations in Research on Students’ Conceptual Understanding in Science Education: A Method Based on the Structural Topic Model

Abstract: This study aims to reveal the trends and foundations in research on students’ conceptual understanding in science education. The literature was selected from three recognized journals in science education. The Structural Topic Model (STM) method was used to categorize articles into ten topics considering information about the semantic cohesion and exclusivity of words to topics. The topic, which has attracted increasing research interest, was selected using a method similar to standard regression analysis, and… Show more

“…Concepts and principles are the basic building blocks of scientific knowledge and understanding of a concept is a precondition for making complex inferences or accomplishing any scientific work with it (Mi et al, 2020). Therefore, it is decisive for students to attain CU about the core ideas of science subjects and build this understanding coherently.…”

“…TM is often used to identify which underlying concepts are discussed within a collection of documents and can help determine which topics each document is addressing. For example, Mi et al (2020) used TM to uncover the trends and foundations in research on students' conceptual understanding in science education. They categorized articles into 10 topics that considered information about the semantic cohesion and exclusivity of words to topics.…”

“…Understanding a concept is a prerequisite for creating complex interferences and conceptual knowledge (Hurrell, 2021). There has been a great amount of interest from science educators on students' conceptual understanding and the process of conceptual change, as seen by the number of studies published (Mi et al, 2020). Pintrich et al (1993) presented an overview of classroom contextual, motivational and cognitive factors related to the process of conceptual change, in which personal interest is one of the motivational factors.…”
