“…Solutions put forward include increasing energy efficiency, the use of alternative fuels, substitution of raw materials by other non-carbonated sources and the partial substitution of cement with supplementary materials (SCM), such as pozzolans and blast furnace steel slags, among others (Lothenbach et al, 2011;Imbabi et al, 2012;Díaz et al, 2013;Robayo et al, 2013). Another option is the development of cements that, keeping at least the characteristics of current cements, require less energy to manufacture and/or use other types of raw materials, therefore offering greater technical and environmental sustainability (Schneider et al, 2011).…”

“…Cement production is estimated to be responsible for 5-8% of the global CO 2 emission (Damtoft, Lukasik, Herfort, Sorrentino, & Gartner, 2008;Imbabi, Carrigan, & McKenna, 2013;Meyer, 2009). Predictions have shown that by 2050, carbon dioxide emissions will be five times higher than they were in 1990 if production processes do not change (Imbabi et al, 2013).…”

“…Indeed, the SSC has been commercially manufactured in Europe and India to reduce the impacts from OPC manufacture on high consumption of natural material and energy and air pollution caused by carbon dioxide emissions. In general, the SSC is comprised by mixture of 80-85% ground granulated blast furnace slag, 10-15% sulfate activator (anhydrite/gypsum) and low amount of OPC (normally 5%) [3][4][5]. Recently, to produce the SSC with lowered cost, the utilization of industrial waste gypsum such as flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum was proposed to be used as sulfate activator instead of using commercial gypsum [6,7].…”
