Trends and applications of food protein-origin hydrolysates and bioactive peptides

Abstract: It was reported that protein hydrolysates or derived peptides have more functionalities than their parent protein. Most functional protein hydrolysates or peptides are identified from various food products, including plant, fish, and land-animal protein sources. Within a few decades, the application of food protein-origin functional hydrolysates or peptides could be divided into two main categories according to their applied intentions: 1) preservatives and bioactive packing materials; 2) nutraceutical ingredi… Show more

“…Based on the agricultural circular economy action plan ("AgroCycle"), protein hydrolysates could offer an alternative application of animal by-products in the nutraceutical or pharmacological industry. 2 Our team has successfully developed a functional CLH, which is characterized by the antioxidant effect in D-galactose induced mice, 4 the lipid-lowering effect in high-fat/cholesterol-diet fed hamsters (8-week experiment) 23 and long-term high-fat-diet fed mice (20-week experiment). 24 In addition, CLH is the major ingredient in GBHP01™, which has recently been proven as a hepatoprotection against liver fibrogenesis.…”

“…Nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals are also involved in the AgroCycle innovation chain. It was reported that protein hydrolyzation offers a feasible application of animal by‐products, which usually contain abundant proteins such as feathers, blood, viscera, and skin 2 . Regarding the commercial possibility of novel nutraceutical development, the candidates of ingredients should be either effective or low‐cost.…”
