The Javanese have no tradition of applying genealogical markers in naming their offspring. As polynyms increasingly replace mononyms, the name part(s) frequently include(s) genealogical markers with diverse strategies. Genealogical markers take gender considerations. Both are the points of investigation in this research. To achieve the objectives, the research applies a qualitative descriptive approach with a phenomenological perspective. It sent 56 respondents' questionnaires with questions related to the names of their offspring. The research res shows that genealogical markers in Javanese society are generated through three strategies that are truncating one of the parents' names into syllables, embedding one of the parents' names, and blending parents' names' characters. Meanwhile, the father's name can be passed down to both sons and daughters, but the mother's name is only used for the daughters' names. It concludes that gender determines the passing down of the genealogical markers to the offspring's names.

This research was conducted to observe impoliteness strategies employed by Jeremy Clarkson in his humor in the TV Series Top Gear with the intention to unveil which strategy he utilized most and elucidate the reason upon the most and least occurring impoliteness strategies. The present research utilizes Culpeper’s (1996) model of impoliteness super strategies as the main framework to identify, analyze, and elaborate the research data. Other theories related to impoliteness such as face-threatening act and politeness was also utilized to assist the analysis process. The result of the research revealed that negative impoliteness strategy was the most commonly used strategy through which Jeremy Clarkson delivers his humor. Contrary to the withhold politeness strategy which accounted for the least occurring strategy. The explanation upon the result to be the way they are could be referred back to Jeremy Clarkson’s main intentions of uttering impolite remarks—in an effort to amuse the audience and keep the show entertaining.

This research aims to identify grammatical errors made by the students of the English Literature department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan and to describe the process of the occurrence of grammatical errors. This research is a descriptive study that uses a qualitative method. The data are the writing assignments of second-semester students of the English Literature department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan of the 2018 - 2019 academic year. The researcher read the writings of the students, then wrote and classified the errors made by the students into types of errors due to interlingual and intralingual transfers. This research uses the descriptive analysis method to describe the types of errors. The results show that the types of errors due to the interlingual and intralingual transfer are omission errors, addition errors, misordering errors, and misformation errors. The results of this study are expected to be the basis for minimizing grammatical errors in the English teaching and learning process, especially for writing in English. The results can also be used as a basis for compiling course materials, writing textbooks or modules, especially for making exercises that focus on errors that often occur, to prevent similar errors that will occur in the future.
