Trefoil factor family 1, MUC5AC and human leucocyte antigen-DR expression by conjunctival cells in patients with glaucoma treated with chronic drugs: could these markers predict the success of glaucoma surgery?

Abstract: Aims: To evaluate conjunctival expression of trefoil factor family (TFF)1, MUC5AC and human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-DR in patients with glaucoma treated with topical drugs, and to determine whether these parameters can predict the outcome of glaucoma surgery. Methods: 77 conjunctival impression cytology specimens were collected from 77 patients with glaucoma (66 receiving drops with preservative and 11 treated with preservative-free drops) and 43 controls. TFF1, MUC5AC and HLA-DR expression was analysed using … Show more

“…If the inflammatory reaction in conjunctiva and subconjunctival tissues may compromise the result of filtering surgeries, 9,15 it is advisable to withdraw the medication 1 month before surgery or to make provision for anti-inflammatory eye drops. 15,16 In conclusion, the 3 medications (latanoprost, travoprost, and bimatoprost) produced, after 1 month of treatment, subclinical conjunctival inflammation, with no statistically significant differences between groups in HLA-DR expression within conjunctival cells.…”

“…Preserved drugs and multiple treatments reliably showed higher levels of inflammatory markers or cytokines. Similarly, another group using impression cytology specimens from glaucomatous patients investigated the expression of trefoil factor family TFF-1, MUC5AC, and HLA-DR, which were significantly higher in patients than in controls [24].…”

“…Most interestingly, using impression cytology, a higher MUC5AC expression and a lower HLA-DR expression were observed in patients with further successful glaucoma surgeries than in failures. Surface marker expression could therefore become a predictive factor of successful filtering surgery [24].…”

“…На фоне инстилляций капель, содержащих консерванты, и нескольких видов препаратов повышается уро-вень экспрессии маркеров воспаления и цитоки-нов. M. Souchier (2006), изучив мазки -отпечат-ки конъюнктивы больных с глаукомой на предмет экспрессии фактора семейства трилистника TFF-1, MUC5AC и HLA-DR, установил, что при глаукоме уровень их экспрессии существенно выше, чем в контрольной группе [43].…”
