Epoxy resins blended with micro-sized alumina show more compact surface condition and exhibit lower light emission after modified in fluorinated atmosphere. Surface morphology reflected by atomic force microscope shows that the fluorinated surface layer can overlap alumina particles inlayed in the original surface and a smoother and more compact surface condition is generated. Thermally stimulated current test exhibits that surface fluorination is able to bring more shallow traps to surface states, and the trap amount increases with the extension of fluorinating time. The photon counting technique illustrates that the fluorinated surface has lower light emission which indicates better aging inhibition properties. Therefore, we believe that the surface fluorination technique may have potential significance in modifying epoxy based insulators used in high voltage applications.

Electrical wear-out and dielectric breakdown of insulating polymers involve dissipation to the lattice of the energy of mobile or trapped space charges. Optical emissions are proof of such energy releases and can be used to define the onset of electrical aging and to investigate the dissipation mechanisms. They also could provide a basis for monitoring the degradation rate. The situation considered is that of a material subjected to a voltage stress in the absence of any gas discharge, i.e., the light does not originate from a gaseous plasma. Depending on the type of material and experimental configuration, light emission can be due to excited states of the solid itself and/or of dissolved or adsorbed gas molecules. The polymers of concern are practical materials used as electrical insulation in cables, capacitors, motors, transformers, etc. This review attempts to bring together the published data on electroluminescence of insulating polymers and to discuss the relationship between light emission, space charge, and polymer degradation.

Light emission from polyethylene with a needle-like microvoid has been investigated under the application of a negative impulse voltage in order to examine the temporal behavior of discharge in the microvoid at the metal-polymer interface. The light emission was observed distinctly during the voltage rise and fall phases with a period of no light emission between the two light emitting phases. The emitted light consisted of sequential light pulses which appeared regularly, according to the temporal variation rate of the voltage. The sequential light pulses corresponded to the sequential discharge in the microvoid which occurred to keep the voltage across the microvoid below the discharge inception voltage. The characteristics of light emission revealed the occurrence of intermittent discharges in the microvoid during the voltage variation phase of the impulse voltage, caused by charge deposition on the polymer surface of the microvoid.
