“…Notably, the driest year over the last century, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) related drought of 1925-1926 (30), also shows the highest excursion in the entire δ 18 O tr record. The finding that δ 18 O tr is primarily related to interannual changes in wet season precipitation, agrees also with findings in tree rings from Costa Rican cloud forests (31) and northern Laos (32). The observed influence of precipitation on the oxygen signal is in line with climate-model results (9,14), and with observations on the relationship between δ 18 O prec and (amount of) precipitation in the Amazon (10,14).…”

“…These results and observations of ENSO signals in Andean ice core records (16) indicate that it is the large-scale atmospheric circulation that controls Nino3.4 SST anomalies (14). Similar controls of ENSO on the isotopic signature in tree rings were observed in Costa Rica (40) and Asia (32,41), and negative correlations were observed along the west coast of Peru, where warm-phase ENSO events result in increased precipitation and thus negative excursions in δ 18 O (23). These tree-ring isotope studies show that ENSO affects interannual variation in plant δ 18 O over large areas in the tropics.…”

“… 18 O studies on teak from India (Managave et al, 2010a;Managave et al, 2011) found both negative and positive correlations with the amount of rainy season rainfall at inter-and intra-annual scale. Studies in tropical regions of South-America have likewise reported negative correlation with the rainfall amount during rainy season (Ballantyne et al, 2010;Brienen et al, 2012), as have isotope studies in Southeast Asia (Sano et al, 2012;Xu et al, 2011;Zhu et al, 2012). However, none reported correlations with dry and rainy season rainfall as revealed here for Indonesian teak.…”

“…Although using whole wood (bulk wood) for isotopic analyses is reportedly acceptable, uncertainties regarding the analysis of whole wood remain (Loader et al 2003;Ferrio and Voltas 2005;Verheyden et al 2005b), especially for analysis at intra-annual scales. In addition, a recent advance has allowed the extraction of α-cellulose directly from cross-sectional laths before the subdivision of tree rings (Li et al 2011;Xu et al 2011;Kagawa et al 2015). Therefore, we used α-cellulose for isotope analysis and applied the cross-section method proposed by Kagawa et al (2015) for the extraction.…”

“…Therefore, we used α-cellulose for isotope analysis and applied the cross-section method proposed by Kagawa et al (2015) for the extraction. The chemical protocol was based on the Jayme and Wise method (Green 1963) modified for α-cellulose extraction (Mullane et al 1988;Loader et al 1997;Xu et al 2011).…”
