The plants have provided valuable medicines in the form of secondary metabolites synthesized by them for various purposes. The present study deals with the phytochemical profiling of Helicia nilagrica using various phytochemical procedures and thin layer chromatography. The mature non-infected stem bark of Helicia nilagirica was collected, dried, powdered and subjected to sequential extraction with increasing polarity using petroleum ether, chloroform, ethanol and distilled water. The different extracts were cooled and evaporated to dryness with rotary evaporator. The phytochemical analyses were carried out on chloroform, ethanol and aqueous extracts. The chloroform extract revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, cardiac glycosides, whereas alkaloids, saponins and carbohydrates were completely absent. Similarly, the ethanol extract contained flavonoids, tannins, phenols and cardiac glycosides. The aqueous extract showed the presence of saponins, tannins, cardiac glycosides and carbohydrates. The TLC profile also showed the presence of different phytochemicals in the different extracts as indicated by different Rf values using various solvent systems.

The present research effort was undertaken to isolate phytoconstituents from pharmacologically active extracts of stem bark of Albizia stipulata based on in-vitro pharmacological screening and their subsequent characterization. Methods: Crude extracts of bark of Albizia stipulata were prepared using various solvents such as methanol, hydro alcohol, and water. These extracts were screened for in-vitro pharmacological activities like antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic activities. The active extract was subjected to column chromatography through a mixture of solvents to get fractions and eluted fractions were run in TLC using various mobile phases with different solvent ratios. The isolated compounds were subjected to IR, 1H NMR, 13CNMR and LC-MS spectral analysis for chemical characterization. Results: The methanol extract of bark of Albizia stipulata was potent compared to other extracts. This extract was subjected to column chromatography to get fractions, and eluted fractions were run in TLC. The fractions with similar R f values to standard were united and crystallized. The spectral analysis confirmed that the isolated compounds were found to be β-Sitosteryl-3-O-β-D-glucoside and 3 -O methyl D-Chiro Inositol. Conclusion: Various extracts from the bark of the plant Albizia stipulata were prepared. Β-sitosteryl-3-O-β-D-glucoside and 3-O methyl D-Chiro Inositol were isolated from the methanol extract of bark and characterized. INTRODUCTION: Herbs used in Ayurveda offer biologically active molecules and lead structures for modification.

Phytochemical Composition, Antioxidant and Antibacterial Studies on Celtis Timorensis Leaf Extract

Objective: The objective of the present investigation is to study the phytochemical composition, antioxidant and antibacterial activity of petroleum ether, chloroform, ethanol, methanol and water extracts of the leaf part of Celtis timorensis Spr. The preliminary phytochemical studies were conducted according to standard procedures. Total phenolic content was estimated using the FCA reagent method. The antioxidant efficiency of extracts was evaluated by using molybdate and DPPH methods. The antibacterial potency of leaf extracts was studied using the disc diffusion method against eight human pathogenic bacterial strains. Results: The results of preliminary phytochemical study revealed the presence of alkaloids, phytosterols, phenolic components, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, glycosides and saponins. The total phenolic content of the tested extracts exhibited a range between 8.82 to 68.32 mg GAE/g dwt. The highest total phenolic content was observed in the methanol extract (68.32±1.03 mg GAE/g dwt.) and the highest total antioxidant capacity was observed in the methanol extract of leaf part (700.0±0.71 mg ASE/g dwt.).Regarding DPPH scavenging activity the highest DPPH-reducing activity (>90%) was observed by methanol, ethanol and water extracts of the leaf part. Ethanol and water extracts of leaf samples strongly inhibited the gram-negative bacterial species Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella enterica (13 mm for each species) respectively. While gram-positive species i.e. Bacillus megatherium Artherobacter protophormiae and P. aeruginosa were moderately inhibited by chloroform, ethanol and water extracts (12 mm for each) respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion, the selected medicinal plant C. timorensis extracts exhibited good antioxidant activity, strong antibacterial activity and rich bioactive components. It required further studies on the isolation, and characterization of active principle to evaluate its pharmacological properties.
