Tree demography in an undisturbed Dipterocarp permanent sample plot at Uppangala, Western Ghats of India

Abstract: Abstract. We provide a data set on demography of trees monitored over 20 years in Uppangala permanent sample plot (UPSP) in undisturbed, old-growth wet evergreen Dipterocarp forest located within the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary in India's Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot. During 1989During -1990, all trees !30 cm girth at breast height (gbh) were sampled in five north-south transects 20 m wide and 180 to 370 m long covering a total area of 3.12 ha. In 1992-1993, additional rectangular plots were establish… Show more

“…Among various combinations with the slope variable [ 48 ], we retained the sine transformation describing the East-West alternation of slopes based on lowest AIC and BIC. This moreover corroborates the main feature of the site topography [ 31 ].…”

“…Uppangala Permanent Sample Plot (UPSP; 12° 32' 15'' N, 75° 39' 46 E) is located at an elevation of 400–600 m a.s.l. in an undisturbed wet evergreen monsoon forest of the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary in the Western Ghats of India (see a detailed presentation in [ 31 ]). Permit for conducting a research program at Uppangala PSP was delivered by the Government of India through a Memorandum Of Understanding between the French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP) and Karnataka Forest Department (KFD) located in Bangalore, Karnataka state, India.…”

“…Mean annual temperature is 27℃, ranging from 25℃ at the peak of the rainy season to 29℃ in the dry season (data from a meteorological station 15 km to the south; Pascal & Pelissier, 1996). The geologic substrate, Archean rocks from the Precambrian shield (Pélissier et al, 2011), is homogeneous within the plot (Ferry, 1994), but the topography has a regular east-west alternation of valleys and ridges separated by steep slopes (Figure 1).…”

“…The study site (12°32'47N, 75°40'01E) is located in the Kadamakal Reserve Forest of the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary in the Southern part of Karnataka, India [37]. Field plots were spread within a 7 km 2 area falling inside a watershed whose main river stream is oriented in the Northwest direction ( Figure 2).…”
