“…On the other hand, Shimizu et al (2003) failed to find such a difference among medicated and unmedicated schizophrenic patients and control subjects. Our previous studies also revealed no difference between schizophrenic patients and normal controls in terms plasma BDNF levels in the first-episode schizophrenia Yoshimura et al, 2007). From taking findings into account, it is possible that blood BDNF levels might not be decreased at least the early-stage of schizophrenia.…”

“…Previous studies have found lower serum BDNF levels in treated schizophrenic patients than in control subjects (Buckley et al, 2007;Grillo et al, 2007;Pirildar et al 2004;Tan et al 2005;Toyooka et al 2002;Yoshimura et al, 2007). “…Treatment with olanzapine for 8 weeks did not alter the plasma levels of brain-derived neurotropic factor in schizophrenia subjects compared to ageand sex-matched control subjects [90] . Risperidone treatment for 4 weeks did not find any change in the plasma BDNF levels in schizophrenia subjects [91] . The mean dose of risperidone used was 3.8 8 1.4 mg/day.…”

“…Some studies have found a different regulation of BDNF mRNA expression in the rat hippocampus and neocortex after typical and atypical antipsychotic administration (66), where the typical antipsychotic drug haloperidol down-regulated BDNF mRNA expression and atypical antipsychotics olanzapine and clozapine up-regulated BDNF mRNA expression (67) ( Figure 1C). Serum BDNF levels were higher in patients with chronic schizophrenia on clozapine or typical antipsychotics, than risperidone (68). Others showed significant decrease of IL-1β plasma levels and increase of TNF-α and BDNF after risperidone treatment (49).…”

“…Others showed significant decrease of IL-1β plasma levels and increase of TNF-α and BDNF after risperidone treatment (49). Some longitudinal studies have reported that lower serum BDNF levels did not increase after several weeks of antipsychotic treatment (63,68).…”
