Treatment with peginterferon versus interferon in Chinese patients with chronic hepatitis C

Abstract: Higher sustained virological response (SVR) rates after treating with peginterferon than after treating with interferon have been obtained in some randomized clinical trials (RCTs) in Chinese patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). However, the numbers of patients included in these clinical trials were too small to draw a clear conclusion. Therefore, a new meta-analysis including a large number of patients was needed to compare peginterferon with interferon in the treatment of Chinese CHC patients. A search o… Show more

“…31,32 Pegylated interferon has been shown to be more effective than plain interferon in treating patients with HCV infection for both genotype1 and non 1. 33 But in this study, since treatment response was available only in a small number of patients, no difference was noted.…”

“…Various genotypes of HCV have showed different treatment effects. Patients with GT 2 and 3 can achieve relative high SVR of 70–80%, yet patients with GT 1 and 4 showed bad effect with the low SVR of 40–50% [ 259 262 ]. This may be ascribed to the different pathogenicity and replication ability of HCV with different GTs and the host cell factor [ 263 , 264 ].…”

“…Therefore, to reduce the effect of possible confounding factors, and we applied propensity-score matching to the two groups. This use of propensity score matching to eliminate confounding factors is a unique strength of the present study as it was not performed in previous retrospective studies [20-22]. …”
