Treatment with ginkgo biloba extract protects rats against acute pancreatitis-associated lung injury by modulating alveolar macrophage

Abstract: IntroductionAcute pancreatitis (AP) protease release induces lung parenchymal destruction via inflammatory mediators. Ginkgo biloba has been reported to have anti-inflammatory effects.AimTo evaluate the effect of ginkgo biloba extract on experimental acute pancreatitis-associated lung injury in the rat and to investigate the underlying mechanisms.Material and methodsAcute pancreatitis was induced in rats by injection of 5% sodium taurocholate into the biliary pancreatic duct. Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) was ad… Show more

“…Al-Malki (2015) has reported that cytokines are establish to induce an oxidative stress by the production of oxygen free radicals, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression, NO, which serve as a key cellular mediator of infl ammation and superoxide production. In agreement with the data of other reports, (Biradar and Veeresh 2013;Xu et al 2014), in the current study signifi cant increase in the NO level was noticed in L-arginine received rats. In addition, Salem et al (2014) have reported that the administration of excess L-arginine could induce iNOS activity and raise the NO level in pancreas.…”

“…Although accumulation of activated neutrophils in the lungs is characteristic of ALI, macrophages which reside in the pulmonary interstitium and alveoli are considered to be the most critical cells involved in development of the SAP associated with ALI[8-10]. Macrophages are plastic cells displaying versatile functional phenotypes depending on microenvironments.…”

“…Numerous studies have identified the functions and biological features, including lowering blood pressure, dilating blood vessels, improving serum cholesterol. GA can effectively prevent lung injury associated with acute pancreatitis in rats . In a recent study, GA ameliorates LPS‐induced acute kidney injury by activating SIRT1 via inhibiting the NF‐κB signaling pathway .…”
