Treatment Results of Carcinoma In Situ of the Glottis

Abstract: Treatment of carcinoma in situ of the glottis with vocal cord stripping or more extensive surgery or radiotherapy provided excellent ultimate LRC and comparable larynx preservation rates. Anterior commissure involvement was associated with poorer initial LRC and larynx preservation, particularly in the surgically treated patients. The choice of initial treatment should be individualized, depending on patient age, reliability, and tumor extent. Pretreatment and posttreatment objective evaluation of voice qualit… Show more

“…According to Le et al [18] , local recurrence is frequent with stripping alone. In their series of 15 patients treated with vocal cord stripping, 5-and 10-year local control rates were both only 56%.…”

“…Each excision can be adapted individually to the size of the tumour allowing the establishment of final diagnosis and therapy at the same time. For glottic CIS, data reported on local control vary between 76 and 100% with larynx preservation in more than 92% of cases [15,16,[18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25] ( table 2 ). In the present series, our data on local control confirm the favourable results obtained in previous studies recommending TLM as the method of choice in cases of glottic CIS when endoscopic exposition poses no greater difficulties to the surgeon.…”

“…Higher incidence of local recurrence has been reported after vocal fold stripping, but these can be efficiently managed with repeat surgery especially TOLMS [3]. Involvement of the AC by the disease in Tis is a significant factor for lowering local control [4]. Available expertise plays an important role in deciding the treatment of choice for Tis.…”
