Treatment options for recurrent giant cell tumors of bone

Abstract: Recurrent GCTB can be treated by further curettage with additional burring and cementing with an acceptable re-recurrence rate of 21.7%. The rate of patients finally needing an endoprosthesis is 20.9%. Due to the high rate of pulmonary metastases recurrent GCTB may be considered as a severe disease.

“…In the larger study, Balke et al 20 and Becker et al 21 mentioned that the importance of combination treatment of thorough curettage with adjuvant treatments such as high-speed burr, PMMA, or phenolization even when they were recurrent GCT. Balke et al 20 reported that they could reduce the re-recurrence rate from 58.8% in no adjunct group to 21.7% in all adjuncts (PMMA + burring) group.…”

“…Balke et al 20 reported that they could reduce the re-recurrence rate from 58.8% in no adjunct group to 21.7% in all adjuncts (PMMA + burring) group. In this study, second recurrence rate after recurettage with adjuvant treatment was 33.9%, it could stand comparison with other reported rate.…”

“…It is the least invasive surgical option and usually provides the possibility to save the joint adjacent to the tumor. Intralesional curettage may be combined with the use of local adjuncts, such as PMMA void filling [1,3,4,15,20,33,37,42,45], hydrogen peroxide [3,4], phenol [15,37,39,40,42], and cryotherapy [24,26,27] with the intention to further reduce the risk of local recurrence.…”
