Treatment of vitiligo with 308‐nm excimer laser: our experience from a 2‐year follow‐up of 979 Chinese patients

Abstract: 308-nm excimer laser appears to be an effective and safe treatment in Chinese vitiligo patients. The clinical response and treatment efficacy was affected by many factors such as age, affected anatomical area, shape of the lesion, disease duration and treatment frequencies.

“…However, the reaction to therapy depends mainly on the site of the body . The excellent response was observed on the face in retrospective research of 979 patients by Fa et al (>75% repigmentation: 40.86%), whereas the hands and feet showed the poorest response (>75% repigmentation: 9.17%).…”

“…If symptomatic erythema (burning, pain) or blistering advanced therapy was stopped until resolution, then the dose was reduced by 50 mJ/cm2.7 During therapy, only the diseased parts were exposed, and UV‐blocking goggles shielded the eyes. If there was important depigmentation on the eyelids, and if patients insisted on treating these regions, patients were advised to maintain their eyes closed during therapy, and all patients were told to use daytime sunscreens …”

“…The xenon chloride excimer (308 nm) laser or light can effectively deliver higher doses of UVB to depigmented patches without damage to the surrounding skin. Mild‐to‐severe erythema is the major side effect of excimer devices …”

“…Mildto-severe erythema is the major side effect of excimer devices. [5][6][7][8] While phototherapy is an effective treatment modality for vitiligo, a portion of patients are slow responders, requiring up to 72 treatments before notable repigmentation has been achieved. 4 In addition, up to one-third of patients with vitiligo do not photoadapt, meaning they do not exhibit a diminished erythema response to equivalent doses of NBUVB upon subsequent irradiation.…”
