Treatment of type I ROP with intravitreal bevacizumab or laser photocoagulation according to retinal zone

Abstract: IVB leads to faster regression of active ROP in infants with posterior ROP compared with laser photocoagulation. Spherical equivalent after 12 months was comparable in those treated with IVB and laser photocoagulation, but it was significantly lower in posterior ROP than in peripheral zone II.

“…Retinopathy of prematurity recurrences requiring an additional treatment after IVR monotherapy were defined as the reappearance of EFP in eyes after an initial resolution of acute-phase ROP. 5,21 Return of plus disease was not necessarily required, but an important sign showing the activity of recurrence. Recurrences were retreated with diode laser ablation to the avascular retina.…”

“…In the past few decades, laser photocoagulation has been frequently used to treat ROP [ 3 – 6 ]. The application of laser treatment remains controversial because of its side-effects, including visual field loss, high myopia and retinal destruction [ 7 9 ]. Although the pathogenesis of ROP is incompletely understood, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been considered to be one of the key mechanisms in vasculogenesis and angiogenesis.…”
