Developing efficient and recyclable membranes for water contaminant removal still remains a challenge in terms of practical applications. Herein, a recyclable membrane constituted of polyacrylonitrile-graphene and oxide-polydopamine was fabricated and demonstrated efficient adsorption capacities with respect to heavy metal ions (62.9 mg g−1 of Cu2+ ion, CuSO4 50 mg L−1) and organic dye molecules (306.7 mg g−1 of methylene blue and 339.6 mg g−1 of eriochrome black T, MB/EBT 50 mg L−1). The polyacrylonitrile fibers provide the skeleton of the membrane, while the graphene oxide and polydopamine endow the membrane with hydrophilicity, which is favorable for the adsorption of pollutants in water. Benefitting from the protonation and deprotonation effects of graphene oxide and polydopamine, the obtained membrane demonstrated promotion of the selective adsorption or desorption of pollutant molecules. This guarantees that the adsorbed pollutant molecules can be desorbed promptly from the membrane through simple pH adjustment, ensuring the reusability of the membrane. After ten adsorption–desorption cycles, the membrane could still maintain a desirable adsorption capacity. In addition, compared with other, similar membranes reported, this composite membrane displays the highest mechanical stability. This work puts forward an alternative strategy for recyclable membrane design and expects to promote the utilization of membrane techniques in practical wastewater treatment.

SO42−-containing compounds are widely present in wastewater generated from various industries and mining industries, such as slag leachate, pulp and paper wastewater, modified starch wastewater, etc. When the concentration of SO42− is too high, it will not only be corrosive to metal equipment but also accumulate in the environmental media. Based on this, a novel cationic hydrogel HNM was synthesized in this study by introducing morpholine groups into the conventional hydrogel HEMA–NVP system for the adsorption of SO42− in aqueous solutions. Characterizations by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that morpholine groups had been introduced into the as-synthesizedhydrogels. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) characterization results show that the introduction of morpholine groups changed the surface of the hydrogel from micron-scale wrinkles to nanoscale gaps, increasing the contact area with the solution. The results of static water contact angle (WCA), equilibrium water content (EWC), and SO42− adsorption capacity show that the introduction of morpholine groups not only further improved the equilibrium water content and hydrophilicity of the hydrogel but also greatly improved the SO42− adsorption capacity of the hydrogel, with the maximum SO42− adsorption amount of 21.59 mg/g, which was much higher than that of the hydrogel without morpholine groups of 5.15 mg/g. Further studies found that the adsorption of SO42− on the hydrogel HNM was pH-dependent, and acidic conditions were favorable for the adsorption. Therefore, the introduction of morpholine groups greatly enhanced the ability of conventional HEMA–NVP hydrogels to remove SO42− from aqueous solutions.

During recent decades, metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have sparked more attention in various applications and industries due to their excellent sensing characteristics, thermal stability, abundance, and ease of synthesis. They are reliable and accurate for measuring and monitoring environmentally important toxic gases, such as NO2, NO, N2O, H2S, CO, NH3, CH4, SO2, and CO2. Compared to other sensing technologies, MOS sensors are lightweight, relatively inexpensive, robust, and have high material sensitivity with fast response times. Green nanotechnology is a developing branch of nanotechnology and aims to decrease the negative effects of the production and application of nanomaterials. For this purpose, organic solvents and chemical reagents are not used to prepare metal nanoparticles. On the contrary, the synthesis of metal or metal oxide nanoparticles is done by microorganisms, either from plant extracts or fungi, yeast, algae, and bacteria. Thus, this review aims at illustrating the possible green synthesis of different metal oxides such as ZnO, TiO2, CeO2, SnO2, In2O3, CuO, NiO, WO3, and Fe3O4, as well as metallic nanoparticles doping.
