Background: Dissolved air floatation (DAF) is one of the methods has been used for the sludge thickening in wastewater treatment plants. This study aimed to investigate the effects of coagulation and sonication processes as additional configurations on the efficiency of a lab-scale DAF process for thickening of the biological sludge of an industrial wastewater treatment plant in Kashan, Iran. Methods: The required amounts of sludge samples were collected from a wastewater treatment plant and kept at temperature of 4°C. Variables, such as pressure (3, 5, and 7 atm), flotation time (5 and 10 minutes), ultrasonic irradiation power (0, 75, and 150 W), and presence/absence of Fe-based coagulant were considered on a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) included coagulation, flotation, and sonication processes, respectively. Results: The use of ultrasonic waves led to an insignificant increase in the DAF efficiency (P > 0.05), however, the application of coagulant significantly increased the thickening efficiency (P < 0.05). The maximum efficiency of the process was achieved at flotation time of 5 min, pressure of 3 atm, and sonication power of 75 W. Conclusion: According to the results, DAF has a proper efficiency for thickening of biological sludge. Coagulation compared to sonication has a greater effect on the efficiency of the process.

Available fresh water demand of a growing population is a fundamental concern of water resource sustainability. Dairy industry wastewater treatment plants have been considered a major polluter due to the high organic content and large wastewater discharges. Grey water footprint (GWF) was developed by the Water Footprint Network (WFN) as a measure of the water pollution loading. In this study, four treatment scenarios including no treatment process (Scenario-1), primary treatment using Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) (Scenario-2), secondary treatment using DAF and a Upflow Sludge Bed (UASB) reactor (Scenario-3), and a DAF and UASB with a reuse application applying reverse osmosis (RO) (Scenario-4) have been studied for a full-scale dairy industry wastewater treatment plant. For these four scenarios, GWF assessment was undertaken using the WFN method by taking into consideration three pollutant parameters, chemical oxygen demand (COD), fats, oil and grease (FOG) and total suspended solids (TSS). The results show that the GWF of Scenario-4 for COD was lowest with the value of −5,609 m3/d and Scenario-1 has the highest GWF for TSS with the value of 41,026 m3/d. According to the assessment results, reuse applications decrease the GWF values.

One of the greenhouse gases emissions resources is the industrial wastewater treatment plants. In this study, on-site and off-site greenhouse gas emissions of extended aeration activated sludge process in a meat processing wastewater treatment plant were estimated using a new developed approach based on IPCC method. On-site emissions were regarded as the emissions related to biochemical treatment process and microbial activity in the wastewater. On-site emissions were estimated from organic materials removal from wastewater and microbial mass activity. Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal were considered as pollutant resources of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), respectively. Off-site emission was estimated from electricity consumption, chemical use and sludge stabilization process. This paper aimed to determine and reduce on-site and off-site emissions for extended aeration process in an industrial wastewater treatment plant. Modification of operating conditions was applied to reduce GHG emissions. The results revealed that electricity consumption was the major source of the greenhouse gas emission for this process with the value of 6,002.77 kg CO2e/d. The minimization of total GHG emissions was reached up to 17.1% by modifying the treatment process conditions.
