Treatment of Superficial Femoral Artery Restenosis

Abstract: Purpose To determine the predictors of restenosis, major adverse limb events (MALE), postoperative death (POD), and all-cause mortality after repeat endovascular treatment of superficial femoral artery (SFA) restenosis. Materials and Methods This is a retrospective review of 440 patients with 518 SFA lesions treated between January 2002 and October 2011. Ninety-six limbs were treated for restenosis with bare metal stents (BMS) or angioplasty (PTA) of which 28 limbs developed another restenosis requiring a th… Show more

“…Similar results have been presented by other researchers with restenosis frequencies of 19-37% [13][14][15]. Some studies suggest that the use of BMS has similar outcomes to using balloon angioplasty (PTA) alone [16].…”

“…Smoking, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia are demonstrated predictors for PAD and in-stent re-stenosis [15]. Although taking precautions against these factors may decrease in-stent re-stenosis in the short term, stent obstructions cannot be prevented in the long term [16]. Therefore, all precautions should be taken to provide stent patency.…”

“…The rates of in-stent restenosis can be decreased by taking several precautions to these clinical features. Although these precautions are taken, in-stent restenosis of the SFA is observed to have high rates especially in mid- and long-term follow-up [ 18 20 ]. Therefore, knowing the additional predictors of the in-stent restenosis of the SFA which can be used easily and cost-effectively in daily practice may improve the clinical outcomes such as stent patency.…”
