Treatment of Subungual Glomus Tumors Using the Nail Bed Margin Approach

Abstract: In the treatment of subungual glomus tumors, the nail bed margin approach is a simple, feasible, effective new method with a low complication and recurrence rate. It can sufficiently expose and completely excise tumors at any subungual region. This approach is expected to be an excellent alternative approach for the excision of subungual glomus tumors.

“…6 In a recently described nail bed margin approach, the nail plate is removed completely to expose the tumour, and a curved incision is made near the side of the tumour along the nail bed margin. 34 Dissection is carried down to the distal phalanx, and a dorsal flap containing the nail bed and germinal matrix is raised to expose the tumour sufficiently. According to the authors this approach can expose and completely excise tumours in any subungual region.…”

“…The most common approach is the transungual approach. This approach provides a good exposure but has some disadvantages like nail deformities [1,6,[18][19][20]. To reduce the complications due to the used approach we prepared a map of the locations of glomus tumors in the nail bed and developed an algorithm for the choice of the surgical approach depending on the lo-cation of the tumor (▶ Fig.…”

“…Wang et al described a nail bed margin approach, where a curved incision was made near the side of the tumour along the nail bed margin. According to the authors, it provided good exposure of the tumour at all subungual locations while avoiding postoperative nail deformity 32. Another innovative approach was described in which the nail plate and nail bed were transected with a single incision to expose the tumour, so as to reduce trauma to the nail bed 29…”
