Treatment of resonances in the scattering of a heavy positron byH2that are due to interaction with vibrationally excited quasibound states

Abstract: For a positron with wave number k, the rate of annihilation when scattered by an atom or molecule is proportional to Z eff (k), the effective number of electrons in the target that are available to the positron for annihilation. There is currently great interest in the very large positron annihilation rates, and hence values of Z eff (k), that have been observed in low-energy positron scattering by some molecules. These are observed experimentally to occur at energies just below the energies of excited vibrati… Show more

“…3 and 4, respectively, separately for θ 3 = 0 and θ 3 = π/2. The minimum in the scattering length around R ≈ 3.4a 0 indicates the formation of a virtual state [32,46]. The effect of the polarization on the scattering length lies within a range of 1% to 5% for 1a 0 R 4a 0 .…”

“…As in [5], it is taken to be a simple orbital. This differs from the treatment in [11], where it is obtained more accurately by solving the Schrődinger equation for the overall positron-molecule wave function in the B-O approximation. The product of ( ) f r s with Y 1 represents a single B-O quasibound state.…”

“…The aim is to deepen understanding of the processes underlying the resonances, which we think is important. The analysis of the Kohn variational treatment in [11] did not directly reproduce the Breit-Wigner-type formula, although similarities were found. The analysis here helps to shed light on this.…”
