Treatment of regional cutaneous nodular metastases from melanoma using high‐dose rate mould brachytherapy

Abstract: There was a CR in all cases without in-field recurrence. To our knowledge, this is the first reported experience in treating skin melanoma with a BT surface mould. We recommend that BT surface mould should be considered when treating patients with RCNM.

“…A randomized trial showed that there was eye preservation but no worse survival with BT versus enucleation . BT can also be used to treat cutaneous and mucosal melanomas. In a phase one trial of hyperthermia with low dose rate BT the control rate in a small number of patients with cutaneous melanoma metastases was excellent.…”

“…At our institution, surface mould brachytherapy is considered for patients with wide spread areas of in‐transit melanoma metastases that cannot be easily surgically excised. Available treatment modalities for these extensive skin lesions are HDR brachytherapy, external megavoltage electron beams, intensity‐modulated external megavoltage photon beams, and electronic brachytherapy . A number of reports have demonstrated that intensity‐modulated techniques have reduced organ at risk (OAR) dose and increased dose homogeneity to the treatment volume when compared to HDR brachytherapy and/or megavoltage electron treatments with multiple field junctions …”
