Treatment of masseteric hypertrophy with botulinum toxin: A report of two cases

Abstract: Masseter muscle hypertrophy is a rare condition of unknown cause which is important in the differential diagnosis of head and neck masses, located in the cheek. Several treatment options reported for masseter hypertrophy, which range from simple pharmacotherapy to more invasive surgical reduction. Botulinum toxin type A is a powerful neurotoxin which is produced by the anaerobic organism Clostridium botulinum and when injected into a muscle causes interference with the neurotransmitter mechanism producing sele… Show more

“…The clinical diagnosis of hypertrophy is often accompanied by difficulty in appropriate confirmation due to vague standards, so diagnosis may depend entirely upon the evaluations of clinicians. In addition, severe or frequent tooth‐clenching during wakefulness is known as one of the most important contributors to morphological change, such as masseter muscle hypertrophy (Bas et al ., ; Clark et al ., ; Kato and Lavigne, ). In fact, this clinical sign was also found in our control subjects.…”

“…Various clinical trials [55][56][57] reported that injections of BTX into the masseter muscles resulted in a sustained reduction of masseter hyperactivity. With BTX-A injections good, facial contour was achieved [58,59] and several cases were treated successfully [60]. Similarly, temporalis muscle hypertrophy can be treated with BTX injections [61].…”
