Treatment of lymphangioma circumscriptum with sclerotherapy: an ignored effective remedy

Abstract: Lymphangioma circumscriptum is a rare lymphatic malformation that involves the skin and may extend to subcutaneous tissue and muscle. It usually presents as grouped micro- to macroscopic vesicles filled with lymph. Surgical excision has been the standard treatment, but it is associated with scarring, infection, injury to the surrounding structures, and a high recurrence rate. Herein, we report a 24-year-old male patient with a lymphangioma circumscriptum on the nape of the neck that was treated with two sessio… Show more

“…Most occur in the head and neck, only 10% occur in internal organs [4] . Fewer than 1% occur in the mesentary, omentum, and retroperitoneum [2] . Abdominal lymphangiomas are most commonly found in the mesentery of small bowel (80%), and have been suggested to result from an embryological failure of the lymphatics when primary lymphatic sacs fail to join the lymphatic system [2] .…”

Abdominal lymphangiomas are most commonly found in the mesentery of small bowel (80%), and have been suggested to result from an embryological failure of the lymphatics when primary lymphatic sacs fail to join the lymphatic system [2] . Other possible theories include acquired inflammation of lymphatic channels leading to obstruction and subsequent cystic lymphangioma [8] .…”

“…STS is a sclerosing agent for VM, which causes obliteration of vessels followed by adventitial fibrosis and luminal collapse [14]. STS is used for sclerotherapy in lymphangiomas in some centres and authors published their encouraging results [30,31,32]. It is found to be effective and safe sclerosant.…”

“…Although various modalities of treatment have been suggested, surgical excision is the treatment of choice for the lesions confined to superficial dermis with highest success rate. (3) Other treatment modalities include X-rays, (10) radiotherapy, (4) cryotherapy, sclerotherapy, (1) cautery, argon laser, (9) CO2 laser (7) and pulse dye laser. (8) Our patient was treated with vulvectomy with good improvement.…”
