“…The six studies presenting results specifically for women17–22 reported successful treatment rates between 92.2% and 96.5%. Of note, two of these studies, one in English17 and one in German21 by the same primary author, contain similar descriptions of patients, and it is possible the same patients described in one study17 included the patients described in the other study 21. The two studies reporting treatment with other antibiotics in addition to gentamicin23 24 did not provide specific information on gonorrhoea outcomes.…”

“…If prescribing either of these regimens, it might be prudent for clinicians to monitor the patient for vomiting after administration, so as to ensure adequate therapy. Although inpatient gentamicin therapy is often limited because of potential nephro-or ototoxicity, the risk of toxicity has appeared low among healthy patients with normal renal function who received single-dose gentamicin treatment for gonorrhea [35][36][37][38]. Further investigation of the risk of nephroor ototoxicity in young adults receiving single-dose gentamicin therapy might be useful, however.…”

“…The use of gentamicin (280 mg intramuscular single dose) for penicillinase-producing gonococci was also studied in 97 patients from Singapore by Tan et al 21 Similar to the previous study, a high cure rate of 97% was achieved. Hantschke et al 22 investigated the use of a single intramuscular dose of gentamicin (5 mg/kg body weight) for treatment of gonorrhea. A cure rate of 94% was achieved, although no information was provided regarding organism resistance.…”

“…Five studies were identified from the 1970s and 1980s that found gentamicin to be effective for gonorrhea. [20][21][22][23] Hira et al 20 studied the efficacy of gentamicin and kanamycin for the treatment of uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis in Zambian males. Patients in the gentamicin group received a single intramuscular dose of 280 mg. Of 302 patients treated with gentamicin, 220 (73%) completed the 14-day follow-up, and a cure rate of 98% was achieved.…”
