Treatment of femoral bone loss in revision total hip arthroplasty: a clinical practice review

Erden Ali,
Lisa C. Howard,
Michael E. Neufeld
et al.

Abstract: Patient and implant selection is essential to optimize outcome. Femoral bone loss classifications such as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Gross, and Paprosky classifications permit surgeons to systematically manage bone stock deficiencies and guide implant selection. Here we provide a comprehensive report on the pitfalls and management of this reconstructive challenge. Preoperative planning remains vital to the treatment of femoral bone loss in revision hip arthroplasty and the authors believe it… Show more

“…Moreover, a range of reconstructive options are available in revision THA procedures necessitated by femoral bone loss. These include impaction allografting, distal press-fit fixation, allograft-prosthesis composites, and the utilization of tumour mega prostheses, all aimed at addressing the extensive bone loss challenges encountered [48,49]. By implementing these advanced techniques and interventions, surgeons strive to overcome the complexities associated with bone loss and deformity, optimizing outcomes for patients undergoing THA.…”
